It’s not even October 13, and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film has already hit a major box office milestone. With more than a week left on the 2023 movie schedule before the project hits theaters, the pop star’s film has surpassed $100 million globally in advanced ticket sales. I guess it’s safe to say that the Eras Tour will never go out of “Style” with these kinds of box office numbers.
AMC Theaters, the distributor of the film, announced that Taylor Swift’s concert movie has officially made $100 million globally, via Variety. Across 100 countries, the Eras Tour will screen in 8,500 cinemas, and AMC explained that it was working to “reach agreements with additional cinema operators” so it can play in more.
The Eras Tour film is one of six movies to surpass $100 million on its opening weekend this year. So far only Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have met this threshold. Based on this, it seems logical that Swift’s film will be among the highest-grossing movies of the year.
Don’t get me wrong, this number is massive and a big deal, however, it’s not really a surprise. Swift’s Eras Tour has been one of the biggest pop culture moments of the year. When the “Anti-Hero” singer announced it would be a concert film, the presale for tickets obliterated Spider-Man: No Way Home’s record for AMC’s opening single-day sales – the Marvel movie made $16.9 million in its first day, the concert film made $26 million. With single-day sales as higher than a Marvel movie, the Eras Tour was bound to be a high-grossing film.
When Will 1989 (Taylor’s Version) Be Released?: Everything We Know
It was speculated that Swift’s flick could make between $96 million and $145 million on opening weekend. Well, it’s passed the lower end of that range, now we’ll have to wait and see if it makes more than $145 million globally on opening weekend.
Considering how hard it was to get tickets for the in-person Eras Tour, and how beloved the concert and the singer are on social media, it makes sense that the film has already surpassed $100 million at the global box office.
Following the announcement, Swifties were in a frenzy and questions about the Eras Tour movie started popping up – like why is it shorter than the live concert? Immediately, fans also started making friendship bracelets, and the countdown to October 13 began. The enthusiasm surrounding this theatrical event, and Taylor Swift’s tour in general, has taken over the zeitgeist, and I assume that the concert film is poised to have a great run in theaters.
Without the Eras Tour even coming out, Swift has shown how successful a theatrical release of a concert film can be. Now, Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour is also set to hit cinemas. With the two biggest pop stars releasing their concerts in theaters, it will be fascinating to see how other artists go about releasing their projects in the future. However, while we wait to see how this impacts the moviegoing experience in the long term, you can purchase your ticket to see Taylor Swift’s concert film now, so you’ll be ready to “Shake It Off” on October 13.
Once Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour hits theaters, we’ll be sure to keep you posted on its reception and box officer performance. Along with this movie, we’ll also make sure you are updated on all things Taylor Swift and her projects.
