Get the family together, because it’s time to prepare for one final ride! Up to this point, we haven’t learned much about the upcoming Fast and Furious 11. However, recently, the film’s director Louis Leterrier opened up about the release date for the Fast and Furious franchise’s finale and where it’ll take place. Let’s just say, I’m very here for this plan!
Leterrier, who is returning for Fast 11 after directing Fast X, explained to Collider that pre-production on the upcoming movie is happening soon, and he clarified that filming should start in early 2025. This makes the projected release year for the film 2026 — which would be 25 years since the release of 2001’s The Fast and The Furious. The director said:
It can be assumed that this movie will come out in the summer of 2026. However, the exact release date hasn’t been announced yet. The Fast and The Furious came out on June 22, 2001, so if the eleventh film’s premiere happens “exactly to the day” as the director said, we can predict that the release date will be in late June 2026.
Along with this exciting update that places Fast 11‘s release window in a very special year, the director explained that the setting will also pay homage to the movie that started this whole adventure. While quite a few of the Fast movies have included Los Angeles as a location, Leterrier dished that it will be the primary setting for the eleventh movie in the franchise. Going into detail about this choice, he said:
Overall, I love that the franchise is playing into the nostalgia, and it’s going to come full circle on such a special anniversary year. Leterrier has said that they know where the Fast franchise will end, and I’m thrilled that part of that ending will include the city where all of this started.
Hopefully, this also means they’ll scale down the story a bit to mirror the first few Fast and Furious films too. I’d love to see Dom and co. pulling off heists like they did back in 2001.
Along with knowing the release year and the setting for Fast 11, we know that Dwayne Johnson is returning to the franchise after his cameo at the end of Fast X. We’re also aware that a few changes will be made to Jason Momoa’s villain from Fast X. On top of that, it’s expected that the majority of the FF Family will be back – including, but not limited to, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Sung Kang, Tyrese Gibson, Jason Statham, Ludacris, Charlize Theron and even Gal Gadot – considering all the cliffhangers we were left on at the end of Fast X that need to be resolved.
As we learn more about the family’s final outing in Fast and Furious 11, we’ll be sure to keep you posted. In the meantime, while we count down the days to 2026, check out the 2024 movie schedule to see what other action-packed flicks are coming to theaters in the next year.
