Watch Doctor Who Season 14: Synopsis
The keys to the TARDIS are firmly in Ncuti Gatwa’s hands as, after taking over as the Doctor in “The Church on Ruby Road” last Christmas, the new era of Doctor Who wraps its first season. Its not too late to jump aboard the refurbed TARDIS and experience showrunner Russell T Davies exciting new course for the show, bringing in folk horror, racial allegory, tense war drama, a little Bridgerton, ancient gods and mysteries galore. Our guide below explains how to watch Doctor Who Season 14 online 100% free and from anywhere in the world.
Gatwa’s historic tenure as the Doctor – he’s the first openly queer, Black actor to inhabit the role – inaugurates the show’s fortieth overall season, however, as with the 2005 rebirth, we’re back to labeling the show as “Season One” as it undergoes its latest regeneration.
“It’s very new,” says Davies, who also helmed the Christopher Ecclestone led reboot. “Ncuti’s new and Millie [Gibson] is new, and it was new to us with Disney and the whole new era, as it were.” Even Gatwa’s introduction as the Fifteenth Doctor, appearing pants-less in “The Giggle” after the novel “bi-generation” of David Tenant’s Fourteenth Doctor, proved another first for the series, and ushered in a daring blast of Gen Z energy that has continued this season with the likes of Jinkx Monsoon’s villainous Maestro stealing the show.
While we haven’t (and supposedly won’t) see any Daleks or Cybermen this season, the Fifteenth Doctor and his foundling companion Ruby continue to instigate utter bedlam in almost every quadrant of spacetime. They’ve traversed the dinosaur-ruled Mesozoic Era and got scandalous with Jonathan Groff during England’s 19th century Regency period, while previously rocking out in Abbey Road Studios during the Swinging Sixties and meeting the Fab Four. The penultimate episode ramped up the tension to unbearable proportions and you can bet your sonic screwdriver that the season finale, dubbed “Empire of Death,” is going to prove heartbreakingly epic.
Despite the show’s facelift, Doctor Who continues to lean into its considerable legacy. Alongside new cast members like Groff, Indira Varma and Lenny Rush as science wiz Morris, we’ve seen Bonnie Langford’s erstwhile companion Mel Bush rejoin the fray, while Jemma Redgrave’s UNIT director Kate Stewart, and Yasmin Finney’s Rose, both reprised their roles.
Ready to join the Fifteenth Doctor for an epic conclusion? Then read our guide below for everything you need to know to watch the Doctor Who Season 14 finale online, 100% free on BBC iPlayer and from anywhere.
